Are you thinking about getting a kitten? In this article you will find all the essentials your new kitten will need.

Cats make excellent pets. They are fairly easy to take care of and great for apartments.

Many people choose to get a cat instead of a dog because they are lower maintenance, don’t usually get separation anxiety like dogs, stay fairly quiet so they are perfect for apartments, and most of all they are super cute.

However, just because they are lower maintenance than most dogs, doesn’t mean they don’t require care and affection.

You do have to make sure your cat is healthy and happy in his or her home.

So lets go over how to prepare your home for your new kittens arrival.

One of the most important thing is that you are ready to get a cat.

What do I mean by that?

Well, I mean that you are ready to be responsible for a cat, and you are willing to make time for him or her.

Cats sometimes need to go to the Vet, they have to eat good food (which can be expensive), and they need attention.

Being responsible also means that when the cat grows up, and he is no longer “as cute” as he used to be, you won’t throw him away! He needs a loving home where he can live happily for the rest of his life.

If you can be responsible for a cat and raise him right, then you can go and adopt one. Or if you are giving the kitten as a gift, make sure the future owner is responsible enough to raise one.

Now let’s talk about some essential things you will have to do prior to bringing your new kitten home

New Kitten Safety Steps

The first thing you have to do is kitten proof your home.

What does this mean?

Well, kittens like to play with a lot of things including wires, phone cords, Internet cables etc.

Basically anything that hangs or moves.

So you have to secure these things for both your safety.

You can purchase a product that hides your wires making your home both more secure and organized.

You can purchase it in most home improvement stores or online.

An other things is removing or securing anything that can fall down. This included vases, plants, decorations etc.

If you ever watched funny cat videos, you know cats love pushing things down from shelfs and tables.

So I highly recommend you secure all vases, decorations, plants etc.

Next, if you have plants in your home, you have to make sure they are not poisonous for your kitten. Cats love chewing on plants, and some are actually toxic for them.

The easiest way to find out if your plants are safe for your cat is either ask your Vet, or look it up on the internet.

Basically what you need to do is look around your home, and find everything your cat could chew, brake or eat, and move it or secure it, or cover it.

These steps could save your kittens life!

New Kitten Essentials

Now let’s talk about some basic essentials you need to buy for your new kitten.

Litter Box

Get an appropriate size litter box for your kitten he can easily get into.

The best way to get one is in your local pet store.

I do suggest you get a litter box that has a lid, otherwise your cat can kick out the litter from the box, which will make a mess.

Unless you like sweeping or vacuuming several times a day, I recommend you getting a covered litter box.

Cat Litter

There are countless brands out there. I recommend you getting one that eliminates odors, and clamps for easy clean up, but doesn’t have too much perfume.

I personally use and love Tidy Cats from Purina.

One thing to mention though, the litter might stuck to the cat’s paw, so he might make a mess around the litter box each time he uses the bathroom.

If you want litter that doesn’t make a mess I recommend you buying a different type of litter called pellets . The only problem I had with this pellets was the odor control. I have a male cat, and for me the pellets didn’t take away all the pee smell, which is why I used the one mentioned above.

But you could try both and see which one you like.

If you do decide to buy regular litter, I suggest you get a litter box mat.

You place the mat in front of your litter box, and when the get comes out the litter gets stuck on the mat, so your cat doesn’t bring it all over the house.

Vey useful!

Bed or Blanket

You are going to need a comfortable blanket or bed for the cat.

As you may already know, cats sleep almost 90% of their life, so having a comfortable bed is important.

Cat Tree (optional)

This can be a bit more expensive, but cats love it. Cats love to climb, play and sleep on cats trees. I highly recommend you getting one.

You can either buy it online or from a pet store.

I have seen them even in some grocery stores.

Food and Water Bowl

Get an appropriate size bowl for both food and water.

Very simple. You can find it practically in any store.

I do recommend you getting either stainless steel or ceramic. Plastic bowls can have harmful chemicals in them, plus stainless steel or ceramic is easier to clean.
